Max was lounging on the newly upholstered chair. It’s the third chair W has reupholstered, and definitely better than the first two.

For the first years, Max treated our fabric lounge and dining chairs as oversized scratching posts. We never bothered much with covers or deterrent sprays since we already planned to reupholster soon. But later we realized it was so difficult to find the same fabric and color, W decided to learn upholstery himself.

It took us over a year to find the right fabric. We finally came across it in a thrift store while traveling in Quebec: burnt orange ramie, exactly what we had been searching for. We brought home the entire end-of-bolt roll, enough fabric to redo the whole set of chairs.

Now the chairs are no longer Max’s favorite scratching spot. These days, he prefers the baseboards.

“Do you have any spare litter?” I was a little confused when my neighbor Julia texted late one evening. So I called her and learned she was cat-sitting her son’s kitten for the week while the family was away on vacation. She had just realized she’d run out of litter.

I brought over a container and, when Julia opened the door, a tiny tuxedo kitten was sitting beside her. “It’s Ma-Ma Moo Cow,” she said, pointing at the kitten. “My grandson gave him that name.” I said “Ethan across the street calls Max ‘Moo Cow’ too.” Julia burst out laughing.

Kids really do see the world differently. For them, a black-and-white cat is a tiny cow in disguise. Somehow they notice patterns and possibilities adults stopped seeing long ago.

After a light shower of hail, the sky turned crystal clear, and the air filled with the earthy, grassy freshness of the lawn I’d mowed earlier in the day.

Max and i spent the afternoon sunbathing in the backyard.

Severe thunderstorms rolled through with large hail, heavy rain, and flashes of lightning that turned morning into night. After I switched on the lights in the living and dining rooms, Max headed straight for the quieter, darker bedroom

A few minutes later, I found him fast asleep in the middle of the bed, curled up with his paws tucked in, softly snoring through the chaos outside.

Max understood something simple: we can’t control the storm, but we can find a way to settle into it.

Sunday marked the end of Daylight Saving Time, the bonus was an extra hour of sleep. So we stayed up late for a show on Saturday night.

But we didn’t quite get that bonus.

Sunday morning, we woke to steady drumming. Noticing we hadn’t gotten up at the usual time, Max stepped in, batting insistently at the bedroom door. He had a serious look, unblinking eyes, ears forward, body still. When we got up, he walked away and retreated to the couch in the sitting room.

Max runs on his own internal clock, completely indifferent to the shift.

I drag a dining chair into the middle of the kitchen, Max’s preferred lookout for bird and squirrel surveillance. That’s his cue. He hops up, settles in, paws draped over the edge, eyes locked on the old pear tree in the backyard.

It’s a good episode: five squirrels snacking in the same tree. One is tiny, about the size of a bird. The little one, probably new to life outside the nest, is already nibbling confidently, just like the full-grown ones.

Max is fully absorbed, holding still on the chair like a sentinel on duty.

One morning, W was working from home while Max lounged on the desk nearby. Just as W was about to start typing on his laptop, the doorbell rang. He got up to answer it, it was an Amazon delivery.

When W returned, he found Max sitting squarely on the keyboard in a perfect loaf position, paws neatly tucked, wearing a slightly stern expression.

W glanced at the screen and froze. Max had sent out a blank email…with a very long string of the letter ‘A’ in the subject line”.

It seemed Max wasn’t pleased about being left alone for so long, so he decided to help W “finish” the job himself.

The shelter recently shared an update from Jaguar’s family. He’s settling in well at home, surrounded by all kinds of toys. His favorite, though, is a dangling wand, he loves batting at it with his extra-toed paws, like a little boxer working a speed bag.

I place a large milk churn on the patio and turne it into a planter. Even the plant inside is artificial, Max seems to love it more than any of the others planters. Maybe it’s the smooth and cool surface. When he’s outside, he often slips behind it and quietly watches the world go by.

I chose the milk churn for its simple lines and rustic feel. The narrow neck, wide belly, matte gray tone, and metal texture were exactly what I had in mind. Once I got it home, though, I realized the challenge: the opening is quite small, and none of my pots fit inside. In the end, I went with a faux plant, the easiest solution, and Max doesn’t seem to mind at all.

When Jenny arrived, Max greeted her at the door, then tucked himself under a chair, quietly chaperoning our chat. As she got up to leave, he stepped in front of her and led the way like a proper host. While Jenny changed her shoes, Max sat upright on the porch, calm and composed.

Impressed by his gentlemanly manners, Jenny reached out to pat his head goodbye. Max turned his head away, ears angled back. A bit caught off guard, Jenny laughed, gave a small wave instead, and said, “Nice bow tie on your back, good boy.”

Some of us have a hard time saying no. Max doesn’t. He knows how to set boundaries quietly and firmly.

A community event filled the park two streets away, music and the rich smell of barbecue drifting through the air. Max stood at the window, staring toward it.

W said, “Why not take Max to the park?” So we did, Max tucked in W’s arm. From behind the eager crowd, I could barely see the stage. Max had the better view, his paws resting on W’s shoulder.

Such events take place a few times a year. From our yard, Max can hear the music and voices, but this was his first time in the event. He stayed surprisingly calm, curiously poking around. There was so much to take in: cheerful chatter, dogs passing on leashes, kids with bright, painted faces.

After about 20 minutes, we headed home. Holding 22 pounds of Max was no easy job for W.

Max refused to let me trim his nails when he first moved in. I booked a mobile groomer. The moment a van pulled into the driveway, Max ran to the door, expecting it was W. When I was about to carry him out to the van, he staged a full protest - flattened at the threshold, one paw hooked around the doorframe. I couldn’t lift him. The groomer tried to coax him with two treat tubes. Max hissed loudly. I canceled the service.

Later, I found little claw sheaths on the couch and his nails weren’t that long either. Turns out Max had his own system. He scratches baseboard shedding the outer layers, and wearing the rest down just enough.

He still works on the baseboards, but these days, he lets me trim his nails too. On his terms, of course.

Max sits beside the laundry basket in a relaxed loaf, yet alert - paws tucked under, ears forward, and tail wrapped close to his body. There isn’t a single one of his favorite items in it - no sweater, scarf, or even his blanket, but he guards it like it’s a vault.

A robin perched on the edge of a planter just outside the window. Max watched it intently from indoors, unable to do anything but flick his tail.

American robins return to the yard now, searching the lawn for worms and insects. Whenever Max spots a robin, he lights up, switching instantly into hunting mode. But he’s never quite had the chance to get close. The moment he dashes from the patio toward the lawn, the robins lift off and disappear.

Our town’s bylaw doesn’t allow cats to roam freely, so Max’s outdoor world is mostly limited to the patio. When he’s outside, I stay with him, keeping a close eye on his small adventures.

A chilly, gray morning, it’s raining heavily outside. Max is completely unbothered. He’s stretched out on top of the shelf, his paws draped over the turntable. The vinyl isn’t even playing, yet he seems content, calm, cozy, as if old rock tunes are already in the air. Maybe, for Max, the raindrops are music.

When I lift my phone to take a photo, he turns his face away. He used to curiously watch the lens when he was young, but now as a 12-year-old little man, he prefers a little privacy.

I repurposed an old table leaf into a small bookshelf in my reading nook. Max quickly found it and turned it into one of his regular resting spots. He often “reads” the books, flipping them down and resting his paws on them, but he’s never scratched any book.

We had another identical table leaf, which we converted into Max’s dining table.

I stopped by the shelter between errands to check on Jaguar, a four-year-old stray with a chronic health condition. I arrived too early for visiting hours. So I asked the staff how he was doing and learned he had been adopted.

His new family has two kids and a kitty. They were looking for a second cat for their kids, who bonded with Jaguar on their first visit.

When I last saw Jaguar two weeks ago, he was just starting to come out of his shell -stepping out of his hide box. Now he’s taken a much bigger step, staying in a forever home with two little buddies who bonded with him right away and a kitty friend.

I’m really happy for him.

When W cooks, it’s expansive, ingredients and tools everywhere, multiple steps going at once, a steady mix of sounds and smells, like he’s preparing a banquet. Max is fully tuned in, front paws tucked, ready to spring. He stays alert, head up, body gathered, tracking W’s every move. It reminds me of my first attempts at cooking as a teenager, with my parents hovering nearby, ready to step in.

When I’m in the kitchen, Max shifts gears. In the same spot, he’s relaxed, sitting quietly, watching me work, occasionally lounging or drifting off.
