Max lounged in front of the sliding glass door, staring out into the backyard. Instead of his normal loose, relaxed pose, he was in standby mode - body low, eyes squinted, tail tip twitching, and front paws tucked tightly under his chest.
When I looked in the direction Max’s eyes were locked on, no critter seemed to be in sight. There was only what looked like a bird doll. But when I took a second look, I realized it was a real Cedar Waxwing! It’s a pretty bird with silky feathers, bright red and yellow wingtips, and a mysterious-looking black bandit mask across its eyes.
I stepped outside to snap a shot, leaving Max inside. The bird was so calm; even when I crouched down to take a close-up photo, it didn’t move at all. Right after I finished the second shot, the bird flew away.
When I went back inside to share the photos with Max, he had already walked away.

Cedar Waxwing are beautiful birds!
Really beautiful drawing, with those vivid colors — including Max’s eyes.
