When the doorbell rings, Max is usually the first to answer. But not this time. Startled by the piercing ring, he bolted underneath the bed, which used to be his old cave sheltering him from visitors when he first arrived at our home.
The sharp sound felt like a shocking alarm, making me uncomfortable too. Our newly installed doorbell must have been set to maximum volume by default.
By mealtime, I went down to the basement to fill his bowl, letting the kibble drop slowly. The high-pitched, metallic clinking against the stainless steel bowl was his daily dinner bell. Still, I worried he wouldn’t hear it from all the way upstairs under the bed. It turns out my concern was entirely unnecessary. Within a minute, Max happily showed up at his dining table.
